final whistler post…

I know I know… I’m FINALLY getting to the last day in Whistler with the girls. I’m really drawing this series of posts out I know, but you know what? It’s my blog and I can blog slowly if I want to LOL!

Anyways… Janice [my favorite slug - she calls herself a slug LOL!] has finally uploaded some of her pics fromFriday, Saturday and Sunday too so I’m posting a few of those here, as well as my own.

To start off this final chapter, I’ve added a few fun ones from Saturday night dinner, before I plunge into the Sunday Peak to Peak Gondola and the mountain top day. Janice remembered to bring her camera to dinner… All I could think about was the food and I left mine in the hotel room! Good thinking girlfriend, otherise how would we have been able to capture these gems of night at the Mountain Club? And these are gems… truly. I mean, just look at me… FORCING myself to eat a burger and truffle-oil french fries. But mmmm… it was so good!!

Anways, on to the final chapter!

And a few final shots from dinner at MC…

Ok… so on to Peak to Peak….

We went to church – early – as planned on Sunday morning. The priest wasn’t back, but the Archbishop [who was there for the Confirmations the night before] was so sloooooooow! It was painful. Anyways, our Catholic-schoolgirl-duties done, we headed back to the main Village and up to the Gondola.

The first part of the gondola trip up the mountain was in the usual Whistler Peak gondola that climbs from the base of the mountain to the top of Whistler Peak. It’s accessible year round for skiing [Winter and Spring], mountain biking, hiking and sightseeing [Summer and Fall]. It’s about a 20 minute ride and the gondolas up mountain seemed ok sized to begin with, but man did they seem small after the Peak to Peak gondola ride! These Whistler lifts comfortably hold up to 6 skiiers with gear or 3 bikers with mountain bikes,  so they really aren’t that small; but after P2P… hmmm, perhaps they are a little bit compact…

Whistler Peak

We arrive at the top safely then wandered for a bit, taking in the gorgeous scenery and admiring the view from above down towards the Village. I have to say, Sue was no too pleased with the SIZE of the birds on the mountain top. The smaller black crows she has a ’strong aversion’ to gave way to HUGE Ravens that looked like they could carry away small children in their large, pointy beaks. Beautiful in their own creepy, gothic, I’m-gonna-get-you way…

Also at the Whistler peak look-out and lounge area is an inukshuk to commemorate [and market] the coming 2010 Winter Games. Of COURSE we had to take pics… here we are with ‘Nukkie [as we BCers call him]

After goofing about with ‘Nukkie… we mozied on over to the Peak to Peak gondola.

Peak to Peak [P2P] was opened earlier this year and connects Whistler Peak to Blackcomb Peak with the longest, highest, unsupported gondola ride in the world! It’s an 11 minute ride from onside to the other and without this new lift/gondola the ‘commute’ between the two mountains would take considerably longer…  The girlies decided, as we arrived at the lift, that we should take the <gulp> glass bottomed gondola! Wouldn’t that be fun?!? I confessed that I freaked a little bit, but since there were two mother’s in our group, they promised to calm me down and handle my panic attack with love and compassion [should I have one!]. So we waited for 1 of the 2 glass bottomed pods to arrive [they only have 2 on the circuit] and with some trepidation I entered the gondola cab.

I was profoundly relieved that the pod floor was not ALL glass… only about a 3′ x 4′ section. Whew! and then once we got going, I admit that I was a little disappointed that the glass wasn’t larger. What hype LOL… Glass Bottomed Pods! Wait 11 minutes for the special pod and look down at the view under your feet! LOL… yeah look down through a barricaded area and through a 3×4 glass panel =D

I have to say that the views from the P2P lift are amazing! You get to see the mountains from a vantage point seldom seen other than by helicopter or plane, unless you are in the Village below. From the P2P, the views are soooooo much closer and unobstructed. Glaciers, mountainscapes, river and a verdant, lush valley of trees below. Truly beautiful and one of the main reasons I love the province I live in. Here is a taste of what you’ll see on the Peak to Peak…

And of course… us goofing on the P2P trip [each way]

And on Blackcomb mountain…

After a quick return ride to Whistler, a refreshing bite to eat in the lounge and a ride back down the mountain to the Village we hung about a while longer, then decided it was time to start heading home…

So that’s it…  It was a great weekend of girl time, spa time and just being and having fun. Thanks chickies for hangin’ for the weekend and thank you Percy [Joyce's hubs] for the GREAT idea and paying for the hotel room on Saturday night. You guys all rock and I love ya!

Same time next year? Yeah… me too!
