Opening Ceremonies and the BIG day tomorrow…

We just finished the opening ceremonies and I have to say that I am TOTALLY PROUD and thrilled with the show. Lots of Canadian content, showcased with unique and really effective visual displays. Great musical acts, loved the Donald Sutherland voice over [he's our Canadian answer to Morgan Freeman LOL!] and the lighting of the torch cauldron by 4 truly outstanding and exceptional Canadian athletes was fitting.

The sad note of today though is of course the tragic death of a Georgian luge athlete up at the Whistler Sliding Centre. It’s a very sad, and tragic loss on what should have been a happy and joyous day for all Olympic athletes. My heart and thoughts go out to the Georgian team and particularly his father [who was also his coach]. How devastated they all must be right now. I was glad to see them at the opening ceremonies honoring their teammate and friend…

I have to say that tonight, I’m very very disappointed with CTV news. They showed the ENTIRE accident on the news. It was insensitive and thoughtless. WHY did they have to sensationalize this tragedy, and why couldn’t they respect the family and the young athlete’s fellow team mates? CTV made a judgement call to air the whole accident, including the athlete’s impact after he was launched from his luge. Did they really have to show his head impact against the steel columns along the track? Did they have to show his body flying through the air like a ragdoll? Yes, it was a quick moment, quick accident and quick video clip, but I contend that the decision to air the entire accident was insensitive and in poor taste. Let’s hope this video isn’t repeated over and over [as the news services are wont to do] and that the news focus instead moves on to the exceptional talents and hard work of thousands of athletes and coaches. It should NOT be about a singular, albeit tragic, moment in time. I’ll step off my soapbox now…

Photo on 2010-02-07 at 07.48I’m off to bed to get a good night’s sleep in preparation for a very long and I expect very exciting day tomorrow at ROO. It’s the first day of competition. I start at 7:30am and will be on ‘tribune’ duty until 6:30pm. Yep, 11 hours. It’s long, but hopefully it will go quickly and get to see some races. We expect a full compliment of press with over 200+ tabled and accredited press members plus over flow areas. The tribune will be a hopping!

Racing tomorrow includes Shani Davis of the USA and Kramer of the Netherlands to name a few. It’s the 5000m and should be a competitive field. The ice has been running well, and I’m looking forward to seeing who wins the first Gold, Silver and Bronze Olympic medals in my city and venue.
Go CANADA Go!

playing and fun stuff…

I just got my new 27″ iMac on Friday last week. Have spent the better part of the weekend uploading software, transitioning files and checking out the fun that is an iMac!

My favorite fun thing on my new 27″ baby is the photobooth. TOO MUCH FUN! It’s a great way for me to take a quick self-portrait, have fun with the hubs [see below LOL!] and just play with it.

As mentioned in previous posts, I’m an official volunteer for the 2010 Winter Olympics and tonight I went to pick up my uniform. Its a gorgeous robin’s blue colour and selfishly I have to say that it is a colour that works well on me LOL. Here is a snap of me wearing my official Vancouver 2010 toque:
Photo on 2010-01-18 at 21.28 #2

The uniform consists of the toque, a very nice goretex jacket, sleeveless fleece vest, two long sleeved [and super soft!] tshirts and a great pair of pants. The whole ensemble I figure cost over $300 retail, so that’s a pretty nice souvenir from my volunteer experience.

Anyways, I’m rocking a pretty bad migraine at the moment, have been since Sunday night, but I thought I would post a quick hello, gloat [yeah, yeah... I've been told by the hubs that I'm a brat!] about my new ‘toy’ and share some fun Vancouver 2010 tidbits… But now, I’m tired. Time to go back to the couch with an icepack and big cuppa chai tea.x

Family Photo Shoot

Spent some time with a co-worker and friend’s family in Steveston taking family shots yesterday. GREAT weather… a little cold, but sunny and bright. Makes for challenging lighting conditions, but overall I think the shots of the kiddies turned out fun…

ohmigod! I need more than 24hrs…

I know, I know… I keep saying this BUT ohmigod! I cannot believe how busy I am these days! I need at least 6 more hours a day for the next 3 months…

Work is crazy busy with all kinds of stuff on my plate for the 2010 Winter Olympics. For example, 250+ signs to design for our celebration site and another 100 for the urban wayfinding system throughout the city from CanadaLine to the OZone and Olympic Oval, PLUS a new, special project for the City’s CAO and managers.

Add in there TWO Commercial Photography programs in the evening and Saturday mornings for another 4-6 weeks, plus shooting assignments for said courses. All of which I enjoy tremendously. I wish I had MORE shooting time, but that won’t happen until after the 2010 wrap-up.

THEN I’ve got two Portobello West shows in the next 6 weeks, trying to get some artwork done, printed gift card sets, a digital calendar series that is downloadable from my website to your desktop and the lists go on and on…

I am trying desperately to keep up on my sleep, watch my diet and take care of myself to prevent any flu-bugs from draggin’ me down. It’s a battle between what I WANT to do, and what I NEED to do. I’ll let you know who wins LOL ;^)

In the meantime, it’s time for some sharing…

Had TWO 3 hour photoshoots outdoors yesterday, including one focussed on natural light portraiture. LOVED this one… Had two great models to work with and I thoroughly enjoyed working with them. The natural light photo assignment goes towards my overall semester mark for my Digital Intermediate Photography and Workflow course and hopefully I’ll do as well with this assignment as I did last week [I got 87% - that's a A people!!!] In the meantime, I thought I would share some of my favorites from the 2+ hour shoot yesterday.

Click here for the online webgallery of images. Oh yeah, thanks for looking!
